The TEFL course offered by The Acorn Institute is intensive, bringing together theory and practice to equip graduates in teaching English to Foreign Learners.
Our 100 hour and 120 hour course are recognised internationally and are endorsed by GoldKey Education, a fully accredited placement agency which places South African TEFL teachers in Columbia, China and South Korean government schools to teach conversational English.
The 120 hour TEFL course offers 120 hours of in-classroom input, of which a minimum of 20 hours is spent observing lessons and 6 hours teaching.
You will be assessed continuously during the course. Assessments are designed to be formative and guide your development as a teacher. Lesson plans, teaching practice and a series of three class tests are used in calculating a final mark.
- A high level of competence in both written and spoken English
- Willingness to work hard
- An interest in teaching English
- The Acorn Institute does not require that you have completed a degree. However you may need a degree for employment purposes. Different employers have different requirements and we encourage you to investigate the requirements in the country where you wish to teach.
We assess all applicants for suitability.
In the theoretical classes on how to teach English as a foreign language the maximum number of students in a class is twenty. Emphasis is placed on how to use the theory when actually teaching English overseas.
For the practical lessons, when you actually get to teach children, you will be in a small group of four. Each group will be allocated a tutor. Each student in the group will have the opportunity to present a 50 min lesson and then sit in on the different lessons of the three other students in the group. Afterwards each lesson is discussed in the group and then the tutor gives feedback. Finally the tutor will help you prepare for the next days lesson.
Children, in need of English lessons, are selected from the Good Shepherd School, Grahamstown and are usually from Grades 10 to 12. The lessons we offer are fun and so the children readily give up their holidays to join us for six days. After the mornings English lessons instructors from Hobbiton Outdoor Adventure Centre offer fun activities for the children.
We offer TEFL courses in the well equipped classrooms of Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), Grahamstown.
Course fees include:
- Course manual
- Registration and tuition

You will receive a TEFL certificate from the Acorn Institute when you pass with an aggregate of 50%. Reports and letters of recommendation will also be provided.
Job placement guidance will be provided to students and we have a memorandum of understanding with Teach Korea/GoldKey Education who place teachers in Thailand, Korea and China.
